Work
I take pride in creating work that is innovative but most importantly, functional. I avoid trends and design for longevity. Currently I am available for commissions/contract projects.
Headwater
Brand strategy and design, web design and development, templates for screen and print, product packaging,
A dream of a project, as Relays with Allison. She set up the strategy and I used that to make a lot of different things, including this website. After everything was wrapped up, we finished the project with a robust brand guide and sub-brand specific for products (called Headwater Origins).
Constant Contact
Brand design, custom typography, motion graphics, campaign strategy and execution
Since 2023 I’ve reinforced the brand through a new proprietary typeface, subtle animations, podcast art, new swag for external and internal audiences, fictional businesses for marketing, and a Nascar driver suit and car wrap.
Jones Family Farm
Branding, packaging, photography, web design and development, custom typography
2022 ended with a h*ck of a fun project. We (Relays) started working on the Jones Family Farm project in October and wrapped just in time for the new year. I got to do a little bit of everything, including some type design and product packaging (CPG, not like, a web product, though I did make the website too).
IN I-Corps
Rebrand, graphic templates, logo animation, print design
As the visual half of Relays I created the new identity for the Interior Northeast Hub. Materials had to be flexible for the 10 participating institutions. I created an interactive brand guide to ease updates and distribution to partners. From the logo through type, palette, and supporting graphics, I set up the new IN I-Corps team with a flexible and striking design system.
Ursa Space
Brand design, social graphics, web design & development, Figma & google slide decks, motion
The startup needed a versatile creator to help roll out a rebrand. I created a video for a new SAAS product. My graphic elements were used for blog posts and slide deck templates. I designed trade booths and print materials. The current site (wordpress) still utilizes my design and brand conventions, which is accessible at: ursaspace.com
Ithaca Beer Co.
Brand strategy, marketing, packaging design, photography, video production, print design, social account management
From March of 2014 until February of 2015 I redesigned the existing product line and all new brands while also creating a massive library of multimedia. The graphic design work had a heavy print focus (three different packaging types per beer). I created a custom web design and WordPress theme as well. It was one year of work designed to last 3-6 years.
Chronicle Books
Commissioned Typeface
I’ve worked with great people at Chronicle for three separate publications. Each project involves the fun task of bringing their authors’ handwriting to life as installable fonts. Since that’s how I started making typefaces over a decade ago, it’s right up my alley. I include stylistic alternates so the every letter has subtle differences to mimic natural variations in lettering.
The Planetary Society
Print Design, Advertising creative strategy and execution, magazine layout
A non-profit with thousands of dues-paying members needed a few different print pieces created. An advocacy pamphlet, the Humans Orbiting Mars 40+page document, and a high impact event poster, and print ads for a national newspaper. There was a bit of a time crunch for all of these, but that was definitely a fun part of the challenge.
New York State Parks
Commissioned typeface
Doug told me his shop was working on a rebrand for our state’s parks and needed a custom font. That’s what i do! While they only needed one style, the process had enough time built in for me to make a variable weight and width font. Ben did an amazing job with the illustrations. I’m happy to have been involved. Brand New gave it some love.
Etcetera Type Co
Open source type, web design and dev, various graphics
In 2018 I started my own type foundry (ETC) with two variable typefaces: Anybody, and Grandstander. In one year I expanded the catalog into seven families and started to gain attention. Google Fonts approached me to work together and open source my stuff. Now my ETC typefaces are used millions of times a day. They’re pre-installed in Figma, too.
Assumptions
Game design, branding, packaging, web design and development, video
A few years ago I decided to Kickstart a board game, which required a lot of pre-visualization, strategic copywriting, playtesting… basically creating a brand with a physical product that didn’t yet exist. Hiring an illustrator. I made video. It was immensely fun and I was able to also release an expansion pack shortly after the game came out.
Some single page websites I designed and developed
Upstate Design
I started (and maintain) the totally unofficial and abridged directory of the “Upstate” New York graphic design community. It’s not bad.
Fbombs
It’s definitely not what it sounds like. OK, it’s kind of what it sounds like. Everyone’s second favorite F word…FONTS! A semi-random bundle, for you.
Yeezy Display
“Sometimes I get emotional over fonts.” – Kanye, duh. Well, I tried to troll him, and got some buzz, for ridiculous reasons.
Lastly
I’m a type-centric graphic designer in digital and print with 15 years of experience in creating unique communications materials. Sometimes this means I design and code websites. Other times it starts as a new logo and transitions into a brand overhaul. Or maybe graphics for consumer packaged goods. A commissioned typeface. Photo or video production. Simple motion graphics/vector animation. Marketing assets for social and email. You get the idea, I do a lot and I love it.
I’ve worked in an agency environment (7 years), higher ed (4 years), SaaS (1.5 years), a brewery (1 year), and completely independently. The projects above span over a decade of experience. I’m available for contract work: email@tyfromtheinternet.com
