WORK

Headwater

Brand strategy and design, web design and development, templates for screen and print, product packaging,

A dream of a project, as Relays with Allison. She set up the strategy and I used that to make a lot of different things, including this website. After everything was wrapped up, we finished the project with a robust brand guide and sub-brand specific for products (called Headwater Origins).

Portraits

Photography

I’d rather point my camera at a person than anything else. I’ve been hired to take headshots, environmental portraits, document events and concerts, and a few weddings.

IN I-Corps

Rebrand, graphic templates, logo animation, print design

As the visual half of Relays I created the new identity for the Interior Northeast Hub. Materials had to be flexible for the 10 participating institutions. I created an interactive brand guide to ease updates and distribution to partners. From the logo through type, palette, and supporting graphics, I set up the new IN I-Corps team with a flexible and striking design system.

The Planetary Society

Print Design, Advertising design, magazine layout

A non-profit with thousands of dues-paying members needed a few different print pieces created. An advocacy pamphlet, the Humans Orbiting Mars 40+page document, and a high impact event poster, and print ads for a national newspaper. There was a bit of a time crunch for all of these, but that was definitely a fun part of the challenge.

Ursa Space

Brand design, social graphics, web design & development, Figma & google slide decks, motion

The startup needed a versatile creator to help roll out a rebrand. I created a video for a new SAAS product which is embedded prominently on the website and on social media (LinkedIn / Twitter). My graphic elements were repurposed for blog posts and slide deck templates. I designed trade booths and print materials. The current site still utilizes my design and brand conventions, which is accessible at: ursaspace.com

Ithaca Beer Co

Brand strategy, marketing, packaging design, photography, video production, print design, social account management

From March of 2014 until February of 2015 I redesigned the existing product line and all new brands while also creating a massive library of photos. The graphic design work had a heavy print focus (three different packaging types per beer). I created a custom web design and WordPress theme as well. It was one year of work designed to last 3-6 years. It’s still going strong.

Chronicle Books

Commissioned type

I’ve worked with great people at Chronicle for three separate publications. Each project involves the fun task of bringing their authors’ handwriting to life as installable fonts. Since that’s how I started making typefaces over a decade ago, it’s right up my alley. I include stylistic alternates so the every letter has subtle differences to mimic natural variations in lettering.

New York State Parks Typeface

Commissioned font

Doug told me his shop was working on a rebrand for our state’s parks and needed a custom font. That’s what i do! While they only needed one style, the process had enough time built in for me to make a variable weight and width font. Ben did an amazing job with the illustrations. I’m happy to have been involved. Brand New gave it some love.

Jones Family Farm

Branding, packaging, photography, web design and development, custom typography

2022 ended with a h*ck of a fun project. We (Relays) started working on the Jones Family Farm project in October and wrapped just in time for the new year. I got to do a little bit of everything, including some type design and product packaging (CPG, not like, a web product, though I did make the website too).

Google Fonts

Open source type, web design and dev, various graphics

In 2018 I started my own type foundry (ETC) with two variable typefaces: Anybody, and Grandstander. In one year I expanded the catalog into seven families and started to gain attention. Google Fonts approached me to work together and open source my stuff. Now my ETC typefaces are used millions of times a day. They’re pre-installed in Figma, too.

Constant Contact

Brand design, custom typography, motion graphics, campaign strategy and execution

Since 2023 I’ve reinforced the brand through a new proprietary typeface, subtle animations, podcast art, new swag for external and internal audiences, fictional businesses for marketing, landing pages, email template designs, and performance creative.

Assumptions

Game design, branding, packaging, web design and development, video

A few years ago I decided to Kickstart a board game, which required a lot of pre-visualization, strategic copywriting, playtesting… basically creating a brand with a physical product that didn’t yet exist. Hiring an illustrator. I made video. It was immensely fun and I was able to also release an expansion pack shortly after the game came out.

The Gym

Logo, web design and development, photography, social media

Local fitness center owner Lara wanted a new look for her two Ithaca, New York locations. As a non-gym goer—well, former non-gym goer—it was a good chance for me to get some research in and meet some great new people.

Single page websites

I’m slightly obsessed with making it all work in one place, desktop and mobile. The fold does not exist. Some of these received nice recognition.

Design, HTML, CSS, 3D, laser cutting (?!), JAVASCRIPT

Headwater

After re-branding this lovely Rochester, NY B-Corp, I got to work on a no-nonsense one pager. It’s hard to make good food look bad.

Fbombs

It’s definitely not what it sounds like. OK, it’s kind of what it sounds like. Everyone’s second favorite F word…FONTS! A semi-random bundle, for you.

Yeezy Display

“Sometimes I get emotional over fonts.” – Kanye, duh. Well, I tried to troll him, and got some buzz, for ridiculous reasons.

Relays

The studio website that I run with Allison. It earned us an honorable mention from awwwards.com

Adventureson

Do I need a website for my music? Probably not. But since I love to code, it was bound to happen. I also shared a new song each week here, for two years!

Assumptions

The experience for the party card game I kickstarted is a tidy page. We’ve run out of copies, but the website lives on!

Gifs

How about 100+ somewhat unrelated things in graphics interchange format? I thought you’d never ask.

Lastly

I take pride in creating work that is innovative but most importantly, functional. I avoid trends and design for longevity. I’m a type-centric creative leader in digital and print with 15 years of experience developing unique brand materials.

Sometimes I design and code websites. Other times it starts as a new logo and transitions into a brand overhaul. Or maybe graphics for consumer packaged goods. A commissioned typeface. Photo or video production. Simple motion graphics/vector animation. Marketing assets for social and email. You get the idea, I do a lot and I love it.

I’ve worked in an agency environment (6 years), higher ed (4 years), SaaS (2 years), a brewery (1 year), and completely independently (4 years). The projects above span over a decade of experience. I’d love to collaborate: email@tyfromtheinternet.com
